Retinol is one of my favorite products, and an ingredient we should all have in our arsenal to combat the effects of time. Although it has been around for years, this anti-aging showstopper is still one of the best treatments to address a wide range of skin concerns.  This derivative of vitamin A can reduce the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and age spots.  In addition, it can also help to firm and smooth your skin along with evening out skin tone. All and all, a win in my book! I recommend my patients start using this product by their mid-twenties.  Retinol can work as a powerful preventative, so the sooner it is added to your skincare regimen the better.

Although highly effective, retinol is not ideal for every skin type.  People with sensitive skin, rosacea and very dry skin must exercise caution with this ingredient.  Careful monitoring and limited frequency of use can help those with dry or sensitive skin tolerate it better.   Also, moisturization is key to minimize irritation and improve tolerance.  It is important to start using your retinol gradually and increase depending on your skin’s tolerance. In addition, retinol can make your skin photo-sensitive, so it is very important to use an SPF of 30 daily.  I offer 3 strengths in my office - .25, .50 and 1.0.  I recommend patients start on the lowest strength to see how their skin reacts to it.

Having a consistent skincare regimen is important to your skin’s health and I highly recommend retinol be a part of it. Call us to schedule your skin consultation today.  I am happy to customize a skin care routine that is right for you!
